This study derives the measurement principle for linear birefringence (LB) and linear dichroism (LD) in anisotropic media based on the High-Accuracy Universal Polarimeter (HAUP) method near the diagonal position, where the transmitted light intensity is maximized, through polarization analysis using the Jones matrix calculation method. Furthermore, this measurement principle was applied to a non-absorbing uniaxial crystal, MgF2, and a strongly absorbing cuprate superconductor single crystal, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi2212). The obtained LB and LD values from the HAUP method near the diagonal position were found to be in superior agreement with previously reported experimental results, demonstrating the validity and accuracy of the proposed measurement principle.
