We operated a lossy mode resonance (LMR), which arises in an ITO thin film, in the deep-ultraviolet region where the refractive-index dispersion of biomolecules can be probed. Using an ITO film on a sapphire prism in Kretschmann geometry, we observed near 270 nm a negative absorbance dip self-enhanced by ITO's own band-edge anomalous dispersion (~274 nm). The integrated intensity responded linearly to the refractive index varied through the concentration of aqueous glycerin solutions. We report the operating principle and its extension to biomolecule detection.
