Research on organic photovoltaic cells was initially inspired by plant photosynthesis, and since then, numerous researchers have been working on this field for many years as a major area of organic device research. Today, with energy conversion efficiencies exceeding 20%, companies are emerging that aim to commercialize these cells for applications such as energy harvesting and window power generation. In this lecture, I would like to revisit the history of this fascinating field of organic photovoltaic cell research and discuss its most distinctive feature—the bulk heterojunction structure—while incorporating my own research findings. Furthermore, I intend to outline a path toward next-generation photoelectroconversion based on the various unique characteristics of organic photovoltaic cells.
