The development of Pt-free catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for the widespread deployment of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). We have previously reported that amorphous carbon, a novel carbon material, exhibits ORR activity based on electrochemical measurements; however, the origin of this activity remains unclear. In this study, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements were performed at the NanoTerasu to investigate the local electronic structure of amorphous carbon. Analysis of the C K-edge spectra reveals characteristic electronic structure compared to other carbon materials. These features are considered to play a key role in oxygen adsorption and reduction processes.
