As a mode conversion device for few-mode fiber communication, a metasurface-based mode converter was designed. Using a unit-cell library constructed by the Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA) method, the required phase distribution on the metasurface was calculated through back-propagation based on the Angular Spectrum Method (ASM), targeting the LP11 mode. The arrangement of nanopillars was then determined accordingly. Forward simulations demonstrated a two-lobed electric-field distribution corresponding to the LP11 mode.
