We designed and synthesized a novel electron-deficient building unit, dithiazolonaphthobisthiadiazole (TzNT), featuring an extended conjugated system for semiconducting polymers. Owing to the strongly electron -deficient nature of the TzNT unit, TzNTbased polymers exhibited deep HOMO energy levels. In addition, their highly coplanar backbones and strong intermolecular interactions led to remarkable crystallinity. As a result, organic photovoltaic cells based on TzNT-based polymers achieved power conversion efficiencies exceeding 16%. In this presentation, the relationships among the synthesis, properties, thin film structures, and OPV performances of these polymers will be discussed.
