Plastic scintillators are promising candidates for detecting alpha-particles owing to their high processability and transparensy. However, loaded luminophores in the polymer matrix have two drawbacks: (1) they cannot utilize triplet excitons in the polymer matrix and (2) they exhibit concentration quenching, resulting in less exciton capture efficiency from the polymer matrix. In this work, we developed a highly sensitive plastic scintillator incorporating a Eu(III) complex at high concentration levels, which exhibited tens of times greater scintillation than international standard plastic scintillator (BC-400, Saint-Gobain).
