Photocaged compounds are widely used in life science research; however, their application in humans remains challenging because light cannot penetrate deep tissues efficiently. To overcome this limitation, we developed a molecular activation strategy using hard X rays, which possess high tissue penetrability. Through this work, we identified chemical structures that selectively react with hydrated electrons generated by X ray irradiation and successfully created X ray responsive caged compounds. In this lecture, I will discuss the original concept, the reaction mechanism, and the potential future medical applications of this technology.
