When an electric field is applied to nematic liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy in a homeotropic alignment cell, a swirling structure inevitably forms around the core of umbilic defects due to the twist elastic constant. In this study, we numerically analyzed the behavior of defects in a system where ions were injected into the liquid crystal. The results revealed that ion localization occurring at defects of +1 strength suppresses the swirling structure, transforming it into a radial type.
