Research on quantum computing applications has moved from the NISQ boom toward a growing focus on fault tolerant quantum computing (FTQC). In this talk, I will summarize lessons from my NISQ oriented work, including quantum machine learning and quantum simulation, and discuss why these insights can still be useful in the FTQC era. I will also highlight that FTQC is not a single approach. Architectures differ widely across hardware platforms, code choices, and system level designs, which leads to many open questions for application driven design and resource estimation. Based on this perspective, I will outline key issues to consider and give an outlook on the road ahead.
