In T′- and infinite-layer-structure cuprates comprised solely of square-planar CuO2 planes, we have reported the emergence of superconductivity in undoped and lightly doped regimes achieved through defect reduction. Recently, similar phenomena have also been reported for square-planar CuO2 planes sandwiched between pyramidal five-coordinated CuO2 planes, calling for a reexamination of the intrinsic electronic structure of square-planar CuO2 planes. From this perspective, we investigated the electronic structure of superconducting Pr2CuO4 thin films—on which only limited reports from other institutions exist—using HAXPES and TEY-XAS. Our results suggest that, in square-planar CuO2 planes, the conventional picture in which the parent compounds possess a charge-transfer gap that disappears upon doping may not be valid.
