Photo-alignment, a non-contact alignment technique, can form uniform LC alignment over large areas using UV planar light sources; however, it is not suitable for fine alignment patterning. In this study, fine LC alignment control by photo-alignment was investigated using a low-cost laser drawing system (λ = 455 nm). The results suggest that alignment control may be governed by photoinduced decomposition of the polyimide alignment layer and shape-induced anchoring effects associated with periodic patterns formed by continuous laser scanning.
