The induction of a pretilt angle in homogeneous alignment cells using liquid crystals doped with a photoreactive monomer was investigated by ultraviolet irradiation from an oblique direction. In horizontally aligned cells fabricated with a rubbed PVA alignment layer, irradiation with unpolarized UV light from an oblique direction resulted in the formation of a pretilt angle corresponding to the irradiation direction. Furthermore, by performing a second UV irradiation from the opposite direction while partially masking the cell, a reversal of the pretilt direction was confirmed in the cell.
