Based on the orbital optical chirality (orbital OC) originally derived by us, we theoretically analyze the interaction between an optical vortex beam and a coupled quadrupolar mode excited in a twisted gold nanorod dimer, and demonstrate the emergence of optical vortex dichroism. We show that the orbital OC, defined by the spatial twisting of the electromagnetic field distribution and fundamentally distinct from conventional spin optical chirality, constitutes the basic physical quantity that governs chirality selectivity in interactions between optical vortices and chiral matter.
