Photonic crystal surface-emitting laser

To achieve higher output power for laser fusion driver light sources, we fabricated prototype arrays of photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs). A structure consisting of a 3×3 array of devices, each with an electrode area of 200 μm × 200 μm, was fabricated. In this structure, it was found that the lasing region changed significantly depending on the position at which the current-injection wires were connected. To address this issue, we newly designed and fabricated a series-array structure that inherently enables uniform current injection. Under pulsed driving conditions, we confirmed that all four devices in a four-element series array operated successfully.
