Despite advances in artificial intelligence, catalyst experiments remain highly manual. In this study, we developed an affordable, general-purpose autonomous materials synthesis and evaluation robot composed solely of 3D printers and off-the-shelf parts, achieving automated experiments in conjunction with machine learning. We successfully automated the synthesis of nickel-cobalt oxide catalysts and aim to democratize materials research by open-sourcing everything from design to control.
