At continuously monitored volcanoes, physical observation networks are well established, but they have limitations in forecasting phreatic eruptions. In addition, chemical observations, whose importance has increased in recent years, are difficult to conduct continuously. This study aims to develop a method to non-contactly and continuously monitor bubbles inside pumping pipes 24 hours a day using a fiber-optic sensor that can be retrofitted to hot spring pumping facilities at Sakurajima.
