With the rapid spread of ICT/AI, video-based materials and standardized procedures have become common in technical education. However, machining and maintenance skills still depend on tacit, experience-based judgments that are hard to codify. Through collaboration with Yasuyuki Ikuno (Gendai no Meiko, 2003) in lathe training and through contest-based instruction, we observed how sound, vibration, and tool condition guide real-time decisions. Survey results also indicate that time constraints and reliance on individual teachers hinder continuity. We argue that skill transfer should be supported by organizational design—creating a learning environment that combines manuals as a foundation with iterative practice and external collaboration with industry.
