Metamaterials are artificial material composed of structures that are smaller than the wavelength of the waves. Although roughly a quarter of a century has passed since the advent of metamaterials, it was difficult in the early stages of research to freely fabricate the extremely fine structures required. In recent years, however, advances in micro- and nanofabrication technologies have made optical metamaterials relatively easy to fabricate, and they are now being applied to practical applications. In this talk, several applications of optical metamaterials will be introduced and discussed.
