Noble metal nanostructures exhibit plasmon excitation upon photoirradiation. Excited plasmons decay into hot electrons, which subsequently relax through various scattering processes, and the excitation energy is ultimately converted into thermal energy. For this reason, noble metal nanostructures are considered promising photothermal conversion materials. Hot electrons generated after plasmon relaxation are expected to promote various chemical reactions. However, the detailed mechanisms remain unclear. We have developed various near-field imaging methods to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics of plasmons. In this symposium, we will present our work on the visualization and control of photothermal conversion in single gold nanostructures.
