When a temperature distribution exists along a fluid-solid interface, a fluid flow is induced along the solid surface in the direction of the temperature gradient. This thermally-driven flow is called thermo-osmosis, and has recently attracted attention as a thermal fluid-transport method that reflects molecular-scale interfacial characteristics. In this presentation, we provide overviews of (i) our experiments on thermo-osmotic flows around colloidal particles induced by photothermal effects and (ii) a semianalytical model of laser-induced thermo-osmosis. We will also report experimental results on unidirectional thermo-osmotic flows using asymmetric heat sources.
