In this study, we demonstrate a new concept of a surface emitting laser that enables direct optical coupling to an optical waveguide without the use of external couplers such as grating couplers. This is achieved by applying the technology of surface emitting lasers capable of pattern emission through a photonic crystal layer. The proposed laser successfully couples light directly into the waveguide by its intrinsic cavity design, eliminating the need for additional coupling structures. As a result, the device offers advantages such as ease of integration, utilization of the benefits of surface emitting light sources, and the absence of additional processing on the waveguide side. We believe that this concept provides a promising new option for light sources in photonic integrated circuits.
