We conducted a comparative experiment using an inertial electrostatic confinement fusion (IECF) device with deuterium gas as a compact fusion neutron source, in order to determine whether the change in the oscillation frequency of a quartz oscillator under neutron irradiation is caused by thermal neutrons or fast neutrons. To slow down the fast neutrons produced by deuterium fusion, a polyethylene block was placed in front of the quartz oscillator as a moderator, and the resulting change in the neutron velocity (energy) distribution was calculated based on simulations.
