This study developed near-infrared photon upconversion (PUC) technology in aqueous solutions for biomedical applications. While conventional methods required toxic heavy metals, we achieved heavy-metal-free PUC by utilizing charge transfer states at organic semiconductor donor/acceptor interfaces. A novel method was developed, wherein films deposited on water-soluble sacrificial layers were dispersed in water via ultrasonication, successfully producing micellar aqueous solutions with maintained layered structures and achieving a PUC efficiency of 0.43%.
