Living organisms and cells are constantly exposed to various types of stress. Meanwhile, they adapt to the external and internal environment and maintain biological functions and homeostasis, through the appropriate responses to and elimination of the stress. The living body has elaborate mechanisms for adapting to various types of stress, and the failure of the mechanisms causes various diseases and physiological disorders induced by toxic substances. Therefore, the understanding of the mechanisms for adapting to the stress leads to the regulation of and therapeutic strategies for various diseases. In this symposium, we focus on the mechanisms of physiological adaptation to a variety of stress, such as oxidative stress, toxic chemicals-induced stress, and stress caused by cell death or dysregulation of lipid metabolism. Each symposiast introduces the novel mechanisms of physiological adaptation to a variety of stress, and discusses how the failure of the adaptation mechanisms results in the onset of various diseases and the development of physiological disorders induced by toxic substances.
