It is believed that humans obtain more than 80% of information from the outside world through vision. Since so much information is obtained from vision, a decreased visual performance leads to a significant decline in Quality of Life (QOL). Recently, people are spending more time using computers and smartphones than ever before. As a result, it is expected that many people experience abnormalities in vision, including dry eye and eye strain. In the field of ophthalmology, the concept of Quality of Vision (QOV), which focuses comfortable vision rather than simply being able to see, is commonly used. Thus, it is very important to maintain QOL by avoid reduction of QOV.
Lipids are essential nutrients for living organisms and play a variety of roles, including being basic components of cell membranes and acting as mediators of signal transduction. Recently, it has become clear that lipids are also related to ocular diseases. In this symposium, we will introduce the latest findings on the pathogenesis of major diseases reducing QOV, and the development of novel therapeutic drugs or lipid supplements-based preventive agents for these diseases, and discuss future challenges and prospects.
