[A-10-11]Evaluation of a Database Operation Method Using Standby Instances in Spot Instance Environments

Recent advances in cloud computing have increased the demand for database systems that provide both high availability and low operational cost. Spot Instances offer a cost-effective alternative to On-Demand Instances, but service interruptions may occur at any time. In existing approaches, a new instance is launched after an interruption and the database environment is rebuilt, which increases service downtime. To address this issue, this study proposes a recovery method using a preconfigured standby instance maintained in a stopped state. When a Spot Instance is interrupted, the standby instance is started and the database is restored without performing environment setup. The proposed method was evaluated in terms of downtime and operational cost and compared with an existing method. Experimental results showed shorter downtime for database sizes of 50 MB, 200 MB, and 400 MB. Although the standby instance increased the monthly cost by 0.77 USD, the additional cost was small. These results indicate that the proposed method improves availability while maintaining low operational cost.
