[A-12-12]Spreadsheet Software Proficiency and Learning Behaviors in First-Year Information Education

This study examined how first-year university students' pre-course Excel proficiency relates to learning behaviors and achievement in information education. Participants were students in two sections of a common information processing course in 2024. Records were available for 65 students, and 52 valid survey responses were analyzed. Students rated 26 Excel operations on a three-point scale in five areas: basic/data operations, worksheet operations, chart operations, formulas/functions, and page setup/printing. The mean total pre-course score was 11.17 out of 52, and the mean item score was 0.43, indicating low confidence in Excel at course entry. Low proficiency was evident for multiple-sheet operations, absolute references, and page setup/printing. Pre-course proficiency was not significantly correlated with the final spreadsheet test score. In contrast, assignment submission was positively related to the final spreadsheet test score and overall course grade. These findings suggest that first-year information education should not assume sufficient spreadsheet skills at entry; staged assignments and early support based on submission status are needed.
