[A-13-11]An Example of Continuous Collection of In-Vehicle Sensor Data in Regional Public Transportation

This paper reports a case of long-term continuous collection of in-vehicle environmental data from a single community bus operated by Sue Town, Fukuoka Prefecture, a typical example of regional public transportation in rural Japan. Using a Netatmo IoT sensor, temperature, relative humidity, CO2 concentration, noise level, and atmospheric pressure were recorded at roughly five-minute intervals. Over approximately 4.8 years, from September 2021 to June 2026, a total of 183,175 records were accumulated, and measurement was sustained across all 58 months except for temporary suspensions during vehicle maintenance—a relatively rare scale for an in-service bus. At the same time, the long-term operation revealed inherent challenges: data were missing on about 7.7% of days, the sensor lost power when the engine stopped, and the absence of IC-card fare collection prevented direct matching with passenger counts. The dataset nonetheless captures variations that only long-term collection can reveal, such as the gradual rise in CO2 concentration accompanying recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and is useful as a basis for environmental sensing in regional public transportation.
