[A-15-01]Basic Evaluation of Energy Consumption by Externalizing Image Recognition Processing on a Small Computer Onboard a Drone

In recent years, drones have required camera-image-based processing for GNSS-independent self-localization and environmental recognition. However, executing image recognition processing on a small onboard computer can increase power consumption and heat generation. This paper compares the cumulative energy consumption of an onboard computer between onboard processing, in which image recognition is performed on the onboard computer, and offloaded processing, in which captured images are transmitted wirelessly to an external PC for recognition. The experimental results showed that, under the conditions of this experiment, offloaded image recognition processing reduced the cumulative energy consumption of the onboard computer compared with onboard processing. This study provides a basic evaluation of the effect of offloading image recognition processing on the energy consumption of a small onboard computer.
