In recent years, building sensing infrastructure that can smoothly and naturally capture the real world has become essential for cyber-physical systems (CPS) and digital twins. However, traditional approaches require deploying huge numbers of dedicated sensors, which leads to major practical hurdles such as high installation costs, short battery life, and heavy data traffic. To solve these problems, this paper presents a multi-layered approach based on the convergence of communication, sensing, and learning. We explain macro-scale, device-free sensing and show how machine learning can efficiently extract key features. For micro-scale personal sensing, we present a body-integrated platform. We demonstrate how to achieve battery-free operation in ultra-low-power, ring-type wireless devices through a cross-layer design of circuits, antennas, and communication protocols, while enabling simultaneous wireless power transfer and data communication. Finally, we highlight the importance of a multi-scale cooperative sensing architecture and discuss the future of semantic communication, which drastically cuts network traffic by transmitting only the core meaning extracted right at the edge device.
