Japan is facing rapid population decline and demographic aging, creating uncertainty in future electricity demand and reducing the utilization of power infrastructure, particularly in rural areas. This paper discusses smart inverters as a key technology for developing flexible and sustainable power systems. Unlike conventional grid-connected inverters, smart inverters provide voltage regulation, frequency support, and operational flexibility through advanced control and communication functions. They also facilitate off-grid and microgrid systems, enabling infrastructure to adapt to regional demand while improving resilience against natural disasters. Smart inverters are therefore expected to become an essential technology for supporting sustainable local communities under demographic change.
