An ammonia gas sensor was fabricated by immobilizing Prussian blue on the surface of a hetero-core optical fiber. Prussian blue was prepared by adding an aqueous solution of iron (II) chloride to an aqueous solution of potassium iron (II) hexacyanoferrate. The hetero-core optical fiber modified with amino group was immersed in a Prussian blue suspension to immobilize it. Additionally, layer-by-layer thin film of Prussian blue was prepared on the surface of the hetero-core optical fiber using poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride). When the hetero-core part was immersed in a Prussian blue suspension, the intensity of the propagating light decreased near 420 nm and 660 nm. When ammonia solution was added to this, the solution turned pale yellow, and the peak intensities of the propagating light at 420 nm and 660 nm decreased. When layer-by-layer thin film of Prussian blue was prepared, the propagating light intensities at 420 nm and 740 nm decreased as the number of layers increased. When the sensor was placed in a glass container and ammonia solution was added dropwise to the container, the transmitted light intensity at 540 nm decreased, while the transmitted light intensity at 760 nm increased.
