This study proposes a novel incoherently forward-pumped distributed Raman amplifier (DRA) to reduce total launch power in optical transmission systems and evaluates its performance. Conventional DRAs using incoherent pump sources (iPUMPs) suppress RIN transfer but require additional coherent pumps (cPUMPs) due to low output power, leading to total launch power exceeding 1 W in long-haul links.
To address this issue, iPUMP light is pre-amplified by a lumped Raman amplifier (LRA) before transmission. Two iPUMPs are multiplexed, amplified by an LRA with dispersion-compensating fiber and three cPUMPs, and transmitted with 32-channel C-band signals over 100 km fiber.
Results show comparable performance to the conventional scheme, achieving ~7.5 dB gain and ~1800 km reach, while reducing pump power by 52% (710 mW to 373 mW).
