The self-coherent heterodyne (Sc-He) method, in which an unmodulated carrier is superimposed on the information signal for transmission, is widely recognized as a technique that allows for the direct detection of optical signals containing phase information. The Kramers-Kronig (KK) reception method eliminates signal-to-signal beat interference (SSBI), which occurs in the Sc-He method, through signal processing at the receiving end, thereby enabling the recovery of the optical electric field independent of the signal format. If the KK reception method is used for receiving optical OFDM signals, transmission via direct detection becomes possible with a bandwidth comparable to that of coherent optical OFDM. This paper describes an offline experimental system for self-coherent OFDM transmission using KK reception, as well as the results of transmitter-receiver pair-wise tests.
