Our research group has proposed a 4-level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM-4) based Time Domain Single Carrier Index Modulation (TDSC-IM) scheme as a method to flexibly configure capacity according to communication demands with low power consumption. In this modulation scheme, K PAM-4 symbols are allocated into N time slots for transmission. Previous MATLAB/Simulink simulations confirmed that the receiver sensitivity of the TDSC (8, 1, PAM-4) IM optical signal improved by approximately 6 dB compared to the conventional PAM-4 scheme.
In this study, we experimentally evaluate the receiver sensitivity of the PAM-4-based TDSC-IM optical signal for a 25-GBaud single-wavelength transmission. The experimental results demonstrate that the receiver sensitivity improves as K decreases, confirming that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional PAM-4 system.
