Connecting sensors to wired cables to conduct real-time underwater observations is a long-established practice. In this case, a single observation device is often connected to a single data transmission cable; therefore, to perform simultaneous measurements at multiple points, multiple cables must be prepared, which compromises convenience and incurs costs associated with modifying the equipment configuration. Furthermore, while the use of optical fiber can resolve these convenience issues, it requires system modifications to accommodate commercially available observation devices capable of Wi-Fi connectivity. In contrast, leaky coaxial cables (LCX) have been used in situations where radio wave propagation is difficult, such as in tunnels.
In this study, we investigated the feasibility of applying LCX to real-time multi-point underwater observations. While conventional LCX relies on radio waves propagating through multiple slits, this study examined whether communication is possible by bringing mobile cameras—encased in waterproof containers capable of wireless communication—into contact with one or two of the LCX slits via a dielectric material. We first conducted numerical simulations to assess the feasibility of communication based on the amount of signal attenuation.
