[B-18-03]Impact of Communication Protocols on Battery Lifetime in Wireless Powered Sensor Networks

Wireless powered sensor networks (WPSNs), in which sensor terminals are recharged through RF energy harvesting (RF-EH), are a promising way to operate large numbers of low-cost terminals over a long period. However, the combined effect of the RF-EH conversion efficiency and the medium access protocol on battery lifetime has rarely been evaluated. In this paper, we assess, through simulation, the battery lifetime of a relay-based WPSN under three protocols—Slotted ALOHA, CSMA/CA, and a contention-free polling protocol (PCEH)—for different conversion efficiencies. Lifetime is evaluated in terms of the fraction of surviving terminals for a network of N = 100 terminals. Simulation results show that CSMA/CA and PCEH clearly benefit from RF-EH and that their lifetime improves as conversion efficiency increases, whereas in Slotted ALOHA the retransmission energy caused by collisions offsets the harvested energy and limits the effect of conversion efficiency.
