[B-19-17]3D Coordinate Estimation System for Optimal Facial Electrode Positioning Using Facial Features

Phosphenes, which are flashes of light perceived within the eye, show promise as a walking aid for the visually impaired; their perceived location can be adjusted by altering the configuration of electrodes placed on the face. In this study, a model to estimate electrode configurations capable of eliciting phosphenes at intended locations was devised and validated, while accounting for facial features. The results showed CV scores exceeding 0.5 for most data splits, suggesting the feasibility of predicting electrode coordinates that can stimulate the intended locations. However, in some trials, the values swung to significant negative values, indicating a failure to predict accurately. Future work will aim to improve accuracy by optimizing electrode combinations and enhancing model generalizability, as well as by incorporating facial features that better reflect facial contours, rather than limiting the data to 68 specific points.
