Although conical beam antennas are suitable for maintaining communication links between mobile terminals and satellites, they suffer from low gain. To address this issue, higher gain can be expected by spatially dividing the conical beam. While a bidirectional beam scheme can cover the azimuth with the fewest possible divisions, there are concerns regarding adverse effects, such as reflected waves, caused by unnecessary radiation to the back side of the desired direction. To avoid this while covering a wide area, beamforming that concentrates radiation exclusively within a 180° sector in a single direction is effective. In this paper, we propose a 180° beamforming technique using a circularly polarized tilted patch array and report the evaluation results targeting an elevation angle range of θ = 30° to 60°.
