Beamforming in wireless (non-cabled) phased array antennas requires precise phase synchronization, which in turn demands inter-element positioning accuracy on the order of millimeters. In this paper, as a preliminary study, we implement a ranging method using a software-defined radio (SDR) that cancels hardware-induced errors through two-way communication and loopback measurement, thereby extracting only the propagation phase. Furthermore, to resolve the range ambiguity arising from the carrier phase wrapping with a period of 2π, we attempt to obtain the absolute distance using Two-Tone Two-Way Ranging (TTTWR), in which two tones with a small frequency offset are employed to jointly estimate the wrap count and the phase.
