In Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation using sparse arrays, estimation performance deteriorates when the virtual array becomes discontinuous due to the holes in the difference coarray. To address this issue, hole reduction methods based on the use of multiple frequencies and missing-element estimation methods based on spline interpolation have been proposed.
While these approaches have been studied independently, this paper proposes a DOA estimation method that combines multiple-frequency processing with covariance matrix interpolation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively compensates for holes in the virtual array and improves DOA estimation accuracy.
