Satellite communication is a promising means of collecting small-volume sensing data from remote areas with limited communication infrastructure, but the power consumption associated with active transmission at the device can be a challenge. In this paper, we experimentally verify a backscatter-based uplink satellite communication scheme that secondarily utilizes SAR observation signals, in which a ground device superimposes information by switching its reflection phase without generating its own carrier wave. We implemented a ground device that switches the reflection phase according to a transmitted code sequence using an FPGA and an RF switch, and operated it outdoors during an observation by the Sentinel-1C satellite. By applying demodulation processing to the publicly available SAR observation signal, we confirmed that the transmitted sequence was correctly identified from a set of nine candidate code sequences, demonstrating successful uplink information transmission equivalent to log29=3.17 bits.
