In recent years, with the increasing number of devices equipped with multiple interfaces, the use of multiple paths via MPTCP has garnered attention from the perspective of low-latency and high-reliability communication. In this context, it is particularly important—especially in dense terminal environments—for each terminal to conserve shared wireless resources, namely airtime, while utilizing multiple paths. On the other hand, existing default MPTCP schedulers select paths primarily based on transport-layer metrics such as RTT, and therefore do not directly account for differences in transmission efficiency among individual Wi-Fi paths. In this paper, we describe airtimeWF (water-filling), a method that optimizes MPTCP subflow allocation using wireless PHY/MAC layer information. We constructed a real-world system using four Wi-Fi paths and demonstrated that MPTCP path utilization can be made more efficient by feeding back the bitrate information of each path as lower-layer information.
