IoT services, particularly in disaster response and healthcare, require both reliable and real-time communication. Although previous studies have proposed introducing Forward Error Correction (FEC) at relay routers to improve communication reliability, the network overhead caused by FEC has not been sufficiently evaluated. This paper investigates the communication performance of four relay-router-based FEC schemes: Overall, Each Hop, Overlap, and Overall+Focus. Simulations were conducted using the ns-3 network simulator in an IoT data aggregation scenario where multiple sensors transmit data to a server. A network with concentrated packet losses on an intermediate link was assumed. Packet loss ratio, throughput, and the ratio of unused FEC packets were used as performance metrics. The results show that the Overlap and Overall+Focus schemes achieve high reliability and throughput while reducing unnecessary network overhead. Overlap increases recovery opportunities by overlapping FEC protection ranges, whereas Overall+Focus selectively applies additional FEC processing only to high-loss links. These schemes are therefore effective for IoT environments with localized packet losses.
