Real-world packet traces are essential for evaluating the performance of network systems. However, many widely available traces are collected from backbone networks, and it remains unclear whether such traces are suitable for evaluating end system behavior. In backbone networks, diverse flows are multiplexed, whereas traffic observed near end systems tends to reflect the behavior of specific applications more directly. Therefore, the traffic characteristics of these two environments may differ. In this paper, we investigate differences in traffic characteristics between core network traffic and traffic associated with end systems, with a particular focus on features used to evaluate network system performance.
