This paper introduces our research results on propagation characteristics and channel models for terahertz-band communications, which have attracted significant attention for realizing ultra-high-speed and high-capacity communications in 6G mobile communication systems, and discusses future challenges and prospects. First, the background and necessity of utilizing the terahertz band in 6G are presented, followed by an overview of the current status of research, development, and standardization activities in various countries and organizations. Next, propagation characteristics unique to the terahertz band, such as high propagation loss and atmospheric absorption, are explained based on the authors’ measurement data, and propagation loss models and channel models that take these characteristics into account are summarized. Furthermore, as challenges toward the realization of 6G, we discuss the continuous development of propagation models applicable to interference evaluation and the development of terahertz communication devices capable of supporting mobile environments. Finally, future research directions and prospects are presented.
