With the rapid growth of generative AI, large-scale AI data centers face challenges such as increased bandwidth demand, excessive fiber cabling, power consumption, and space constraints. This paper presents a 1.6T optical transceiver based on multicore fiber (MCF) to address these issues. The proposed transceiver integrates a fan-in/fan-out (FIFO) device, enabling direct connection to MCF and reducing fiber count while improving density. A 4-core MCF is employed while maintaining compatibility with conventional silicon photonics-based architectures for practical implementation.Experimental results show excellent performance at 224-Gbps PAM4, including low TDECQ, sufficient extinction ratio, stable link-up, and pre-FEC BER below 1×10⁻¹⁰. Interoperability tests using MCFs from three vendors demonstrate low connection loss and good consistency. In 500-m transmission, no significant penalty from inter-core crosstalk is observed, meeting IEEE DR requirements.These results indicate that the proposed transceiver is a promising solution for high-density, power-efficient interconnects in AI data centers, supporting future standardization and deployment.
