The wavefront matching method is an optimization technique which gives input and output, and decides refractive index distribution which provides optical waveguide and spatial phase modulator. Originally, it started from the trial which reproduced the self-forming waveguide by the photorefractive material on the computer and used it for the optical circuit design. Though this trial ended in failure at the beginning, it was converted to the policy in which the refractive index was changed so as to cancel not the intensity of the propagating light but the phase mismatch, and it developed to the wave front matching method. By changing the viewpoint, the wave front matching method can be called a kind of virtual physical phenomenon in which the photorefractive material which responds to the intensity is replaced with the “material" in the numerical calculation which responds to the phase mismatch. In this lecture, the wavefront matching method is introduced from the origin, and the optical circuit design is considered as a physical phenomenon in the numerical calculation.
