In polarization-multiplexed transmitters/receivers and polarization diversity circuits, residual unwanted polarization components that are not completely separated by polarization beam splitters can cause polarization crosstalk and degrade the performance of subsequent optical circuits. In this report, we fabricated a TM-pass polarizer by forming a silicon nitride thin film on the ridge sidewalls of a silica-based planar lightwave circuit , and experimentally confirmed an excess loss of less than 1 dB and a polarization extinction ratio of more than 40 dB.
